How do you calculate how much material is needed?
Answer: The formula is ([L*W*D]/27)* conversion factor = compacted tonnage. Example, you have a flex base road to install that is 100 feet long by 12 feet wide and it will have a depth of 4 inches thick (.33 feet = 4 inches divided by 12 inches). Multiply these three numbers (L*W*D) to get the cubic feet then divide by 27 to get the cubic yards. Because we weigh each load, material must be converted to tons so you multiply the cubic yards by the conversion factor (shown below).
This problem would solve as follows ([100*12*.33)]/27)* 1.65=24.20 tons of Flex.
The following conversion factors can be used for our materials.
Flex 1.65
3/8 minus Fines 1.65
1 1/2 " 1.4
3" 1.3
Crushed Asphalt 1.65
*******Please keep in mind there is always a plus or minus factor on the calculations due to the conditions of the sub grade and installation process.
